TED: Embracing otherness, embracing myself (by Thandie Newton)

Actor Thandie Newton tells the story of finding her "otherness" -- first, as a child growing up in two distinct cultures, and then as an actor playing with many different selves. A warm, wise talk, fresh from stage at TEDGlobal 2011.

These are turbulent times. Throughout the world, our news feeds are dominated by stories of division, misunderstanding and intolerance. Understandably, people are feeling more marginalized, anxious and hopeless. But what if we're not as disconnected as these stories would have us believe?

In her beautifully delivered TED Talk, Thandie Newton contends that we humans navigate the world based on a false illusion of self, one that's individual and apart from others. She proposes that we craft this false self based on other people's projections of who we are, and that the labels with which we self-identify -- like race, gender, ethnicity, religion -- are manmade constructs that further our sense of otherness.

Newton offers an optimistic look at a future where we discover the true essence of who we are and find a greater sense of compassion and infinite connectedness. I hope you'll be as inspired by this talk as I am.
